Neighbour In Need: Street Outreach

This year, Across U-hub will be launching a series of “City Warmer: Neighbour In Need” programs, focusing on giving back to the community.

Actions speak louder than words. Join us in preparing sandwiches or baked goods to be delivered to those experiencing homelessness in Toronto. Partnering with Ve’ahavta, a Jewish humanitarian organization, Across U-hub aims to create a meaningful hands-on experience for youths to care for our neighbours.

Objectives

  • Engage in a first-hand experience to serve our neighbours
  • Interact with them respectfully and understand their needs
  • Support outreach workers who tirelessly care for our vulnerable neighbours seven days a week

How will the street outreach be run?

  • The van shift begins and ends at 4100 Chesswood Drive, Toronto. Volunteers are required to complete the full shift and cannot be dropped off earlier or at different locations, so please ensure you have arranged transportation to and from your shift.
  • Upon arrival for your shift, the outreach workers will provide a brief orientation, covering the schedule for the shift, safety policies, and volunteer responsibilities.
  • At each stop, volunteers and the outreach team will exit the vehicle to distribute food, coffee, clothing, and hygiene supplies while engaging in conversations with clients.
  • There will be one or two stops for food and washroom breaks.
  • Please be aware that during the shift, the following subjects may come up:
    – Abuse (physical, mental, emotional, verbal, sexual or other)
    – Substance use (legal and illegal drugs or alcohol or medical)
    – Mental health and mental illness
    – Oppression or marginalization
    – Sex trafficking
    – Death or dying
  • Ve’ahavta shift leaders will be available to address any situations if you feel uncomfortable with any interaction during your shift.
