CRAFTERIA - Chainmail Accessory Making

Crafteria is a combination of the English word “Craft” and Spanish – “tería”, which means a place/hub where something is done.

In this Crafteria project series, we offer unique arts and handmade crafts workshops for youth, from craft coffee, candle making, Pastel Nagomi Art, leather work to bread making. Crafteria is a place where both beginners and professional craftsmen can make beautiful things, giving our minds a chance to rest and rejuvenate through sharing and the creative process.

Objectives

  • To build a craft hub to appreciate, respect and explore different forms of handmade craft.
  • To discover a craft idea that cheers up people.
  • To learn about the making of chainmail accessories.

What is Chainmail?

Chainmail is a type of armor consisting of interlocking metal rings, historically worn by warriors and soldiers for protection in combat. Chainmail jewellery is unique and captivating, the rings form beautiful patterns that make the jewellery eye-catching and attractive. These accessories, like bracelets and necklaces, can add a touch of history and charm to any outfit. With its intricate designs and handcrafted appeal, chainmail jewellery stands out as a special and distinctive choice for those seeking something different.

What will you learn?

  • The basics and fundamentals of the chain maille language
  • How to weave jump rings together into various patterns and chain type
  • How to create a beautiful accessory using the chain maille technique
  • Utilize the learned technique on your very own accessory products

What will the workshop include?

  • 3 end products (one bracelet and two pendants)
  • Materials, tools and equipment being used in the workshops will be included.

Who is the instructor?

Caleb Chow
During his study at OCAD, Caleb had the chance to experiment with various art forms. However, it was chainmail that truly resonated with him and played a significant role in supporting him through his battle against cancer.

In these CRAFTERIA sessions, Caleb will be sharing, and creating 3 chainmail pieces – a bracelet, and two pendants (a cross & a flower).
