International Coastal Cleanup Day

Since 2010, Across U-hub has been dedicated to raising environmental awareness through our “Tomorrow Starts Today” programs. These initiatives include various stewardship activities designed to educate youth on becoming socially responsible citizens. Our past efforts include tree planting, neighborhood cleanups, invasive species removal, cooking zero-waste meals, educational hiking trips, and more.

The name “Tomorrow Starts Today” reflects our belief that the future of our planet is shaped by our actions today. With our vision set on a greener future, every action we take now helps build a healthier and more sustainable tomorrow.

Join Across U-hub and Rouge National Urban Park on International Coastal Cleanup Day for a meaningful, hands-on experience in caring for our Earth! We will be cleaning up the Rouge Beach and Marsh Area by collecting litter left behind by visitors. The litter we collect will also contribute to Parks Canada’s nationwide initiative called “Team Up to Clean Up” which focuses on protecting coastal and shoreline environments.

What is Rouge Beach and Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP)?

Rouge Beach and Marsh is the largest wetland and marshes in Toronto. There is also a sandy beach and a 1 km Rouge Beach Trail.

RNUP is one of the largest urban parks in North America. Discover the natural wonders of Canada through the park’s diverse landscapes, including forests, creeks, farms, trails, marshland, and a beach on Lake Ontario. With a history spanning 10,000 years, RNUP is a “people’s park” that offers a wealth of natural beauty and cultural heritage to explore.

What is International Coastal Cleanup Day?

The International Coastal Cleanup® began more than 35 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. Since its inception, it mobilizes more than 17 million volunteers worldwide to remove over 350 million pounds trash from beaches and waterways.

Objectives

  • Engage participants in the care and stewardship of the park, fostering a sense of commitment and appreciation within the community that contributes to the protection and enjoyment of natural spaces.
  • Remove litter and debris from shorelines to safeguard marine and coastal ecosystems, while raising environmental awareness and promoting a sustainable future.
  • Collect data on the types and amounts of litter found and discuss practical tips to reduce our daily environmental impact.

What will the program include?

  • Litter and debris pickup at Rouge Beach and Marsh areas
  • Join an educational tour of Rouge Beach
  • Take part in Parks Canada’s nationwide “Team Up to Cleanup Up” initiative, and gain insights into the development and conservation efforts of RNUP.
  • Interactive group activities and discussion to enhance environmental awareness

What should I wear?

  • Closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops please)
  • Weather-appropriate jacket
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Small backpacks for personal belongings

What should I bring?

  • LUNCH (There are no restaurants or food trucks at Rouge Beach)
  • Snacks and plenty of water
