What is City Mosaic?

City Mosaic, recognized by the City of Markham, is a one-day MULTICULTURAL ADVENTURE for those who are looking for an OUT-OF-THE-ORDINARY experience. City Mosaic provides an opportunity for youth and young adults to embark on a GLOBAL JOURNEY, getting a TASTE OF EVERY CULTURE in the world without ever having to step foot out of their own neighbourhood.

With the theme in this year’s City Mosaic: Stories in the City, participants will be going on a guided cultural exploration in the City of Markham on FOOT and/or CYCLING. Participants will explore different “story spots” with our ambassadors providing historical and cultural context at each spot. Through City Mosaic, we aim to keep our participants active and connected to the neighbourhood, while getting out to enjoy nature.

Every individual and a place has a story to tell. Through City Mosaic: Stories in the City, we hope to create dialogue and listen to stories about our neighbour and neighbourhood which we may not normally engage with.

FAQs

General

City Mosaic is a one-day multicultural adventure for those who are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary experience. You have the opportunity to get out of the house and explore hidden treasures in the City of Markham.

Teams of TWO or FOUR will explore the city to find Markham’s hidden treasures. Teamwork and friendships will be tested as you search through clues and hints revealing the richness of the city’s multicultural diversity. Through this unique expedition, you and your team will get a chance to connect with and experience the different cultures of our fellow members of the community. You will be challenged to expand your comfort zones as you decipher the many mysteries and human stories of our community.

In this year’s City Mosaic, we will be exploring the City of Markham. There are many well-developed bike lanes in Markham. So in this year’s City Mosaic, other than exploring on foot, you can also bring your own bike and explore the city with us.

Cycling is optional. If you want to cycle, please bring your own bike as you are more familiar with it.

First, you have to be 18 years old or above. To be a safe bike rider on the road, you should know the traffic handling skills and the rules of the road and feel comfortable riding on residential and some urban streets. Screening might be needed.

Screening and road safety workshop will be arranged in early-May.

Ideally yes. However, we understand that it could be difficult to gather your friends to join as a team of 4. You may also join CM as a pair. Most of our games are designed for even numbers participants. It is always good to have friend(s) to explore the city TOGETHER.

In this year’s City Mosaic, we focus on digging deep into the stories in our neighbourhood. It is not a race nor a competition so there will not be any prizes this year. However, you will receive a souvenir bag at the end of the program.

Registration

You need to be an Across U-hub member to register. Sign up for an account for free, or login and register here.

You will receive a confirmation email and there will be an info session for all leaders which is mandatory to attend.

Event T-shirt, program guide, and souvenir bag with light refreshment are included.

City Mosaic is a program that emphasizes teamwork. That is why we require all teams to register in a team and EXPLORE the city as a team. We encourage you to try your best to find friends, family or classmates to form a team of 2 or 4 for a day of fun!

If you have any new member(s) or replacement, please give us a call, email, and/or let us know by May 31, 2023 (Wednesday). No more amendment for the team after May 31.

During the game

It’s completely up to you on how you want to explore the city! It is not mandatory to visit all checkpoints, but the more checkpoints you visit the more human stories you can listen, explore and learn. Just make sure you return to the finishing line for the closing ceremony!

NO, because rules are rules!

Just to be clear, other than walking, running, or cycling, you MAY NOT use any of the following or similar methods of transportation:

  • YRT Buses
  • Taxies
  • Cars, motorcycles, trucks
  • Skateboards, rollerblades, scooters (or the electric ones)
  • Uber
  • Hover boards

In short, travel ON FOOT or BY BIKE…

Everyone loves convenience, but to ensure all participants have a full experience of City Mosaic, we ask that everyone gather at the opening ceremony to start their exploration journey as a team.

Safety and Rules

Pace yourself for food and stay hydrated. You also won’t want to miss out the good food around Markham… AND, “phone eats first”, share the goodies with your foodies on Instagram!

Your pet would be much safer at home than running around with you for a full day. Please keep your pet at home.

If you are sick or feeling unwell, we ask that you not attend the event and stay home to prevent transmission to others, except to seek testing or medical care if required. This will help stop the spread of respiratory illnesses.
